Mom pleads guilty in child heat deaths

DETROIT, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A Detroit woman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the deaths of her two children who died locked in a hot car while their mother had her hair done.

The woman's 3-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter suffered heat stroke on June 28, 2002, the charges said. The car in which they died had only one window slightly cracked.

Tarajee Maynor, 27, could have been charged with first-degree murder if prosecutors had determined she intended to harm the children.

She will face a minimum of 12-and-one-half years in prison under a plea bargain when she is sentenced Sept. 22, the Detroit Free Press said.

Maynor, who was pregnant with a third child, has spent the last two years in prison awaiting trial.

The baby boy was placed in an adoptive home.
