Gay GOP group slams Keyes remark

WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- A Republican gay advocacy group Wednesday blasted Illinois U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes for verbally attacking Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter.

The Log Cabin Republicans said Keyes referred to Cheney's openly lesbian daughter, Mary, as a "selfish hedonist" on the eve of the vice president's address to the Republican National Convention in New York.

"In a political career defined by failures, this is a new low for Alan Keyes," Log Cabin Executive Director Patrick Guerriero said in a statement. "Attacking a politician's children is beyond the pale, even for an extremist like Alan Keyes."

Guerriero added, "Alan Keyes is good at two things: losing elections and dividing Americans."

A radio personality based in Maryland, Keyes moved to Illinois to run for the Senate at the request of the state GOP, whose candidate stepped down in a sex scandal.

"The Republican Party has a choice: We can either be the party of Arnold Schwarzenegger or the party of Alan Keyes," Guerriero said.
