Titanic newsreel footage found in England

LONDON, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A fragile newsreel film of Titanic survivors arriving in New York City has surfaced in a garden shed in England, The Mirror reported Tuesday.

The 35mm black and white film is the only known surviving record of the aftermath of the April 14, 1912, North Atlantic sinking that claimed more than 1,500 lives.

It shows the rescue ship Carpathia returning to port with some of the 705 exhausted survivors, who were swarmed by reporters. It also shows New York society ladies in full Edwardian dress, taking food parcels to the survivors, as well as the SS Mackay Bennett leaving Nova Scotia loaded with coffins of the victims.

The newsreel originally played in English theaters, and the projectionist bought the film at the end of its run for about 25 cents. He put it in his shed, and his son recently discovered it.

It is expected to fetch $10,000 at an auction of Titanic memorabilia in Devizes next month.

A second-class passenger list, with three previously unrecorded travelers, is also up for auction and is expected to sell for at least $18,000.
