Killer typhoon hits southern Japan

TOKYO, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Typhoon Chaba slammed into south Japan with 130 mph winds early Monday, killing at least five, leaving four sailors missing and 98 injured, the BBC said.

The typhoon swept across a coastal area on Kyushu Island where about 38,000 people abandoned their homes for emergency shelters.

Besides the five dead and the injured, a Vietnamese freighter ran aground in the storm, tossing four sailors overboard. None have been found.

The typhoon also left more than 350,000 residents without power and halted all flights, trains and road traffic.

Warnings were broadcast about potential flooding and landslides. Chaba is the 16th typhoon to hit the area this summer and its arrival coincides with the highest tides of the year.

Japanese television showed video of huge waves battering coastal buildings, and people in the city of Kumamoto wading through knee-high water.

The typhoon was expected to hit Tohoku or Hokkaido on Tuesday.
