China launches science satellite

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- China launched an experimental satellite into orbit Sunday, atop a Long March 2C carrier rocket; reported Xinhua, China's government-run news agency.

Space officials said the satellite, which was in normal orbit Sunday, was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province. They said that it was China's 19th recoverable science experimental satellite to be launched.

Officials said the satellite will orbit for a few days before returning to Earth. The satellite was mainly for scientific research; such as space research, land surveying, mapping, and other scientific experiments.

The satellite was being monitored by Xi'an Satellite Monitor and Control Center, which will also recover its re-entry module.
