CARACAS, Venezuela, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Venezuela has withdrawn its ambassador to Panama, a day after Cuba broke off diplomatic relations with Panama over a pardon for four Cuban exiles.
One of the four is wanted in Venezuela, a close ally of Cuba, on charges relating to the hijacking of a passenger plane in 1976, the BBC reported Saturday.
Cuba has accused the four of trying to kill Cuban President Fidel Castro four years ago.
Although Venezuela is withdrawing its Panamanian ambassador, it is not cutting off diplomatic ties with the Central American nation, as is Cuba.
Panama's outgoing president, Mireya Moscoso, pardoned them for "humanitarian reasons," because "if they stay (in Panama), they might be extradited to Venezuela or Cuba, where I am sure they would have killed them."
Incoming Panamanian leader, Martin Torrijos, has publicly opposed the pardons. He takes office Wednesday.
All four pardoned men have left Panama for other countries.
