Greeks protest Powell visit to Olympics

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Hundreds turned out in Athens Friday to protest U.S. policies in Iraq and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's pending appearance at the Olympics.

March organizer Petros Constantinou, a trade union journalist, told the BBC Powell has been "very provocative" over the Iraqi invasion.

"We are not anti-American, we are anti-American imperialism," he said.

Several hundred riot police blocked marchers from the U.S. embassy and the Hilton Hotel, where some members of the International Olympic Committee are lodged. A few demonstrators threw bottles and placards at the officers.

Powell was scheduled to arrive in Athens Saturday to attend Sunday's closing ceremonies of the games. Another demonstration was planned for Saturday.
