Germany seeks to restart Mideast process

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- German Foreign Minister Joshka Fisher said Friday his country is seeking to reactive the stalled Middle East peace process with its EU partners.

Fisher made the comment following meetings with senior Lebanese officials including President Emile Lahoud, Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and his counterpart Jean Obeid.

An official statement said Germany is preparing necessary moves for reactivating the peace process to achieve a just and comprehensive settlement in the region.

It said Lahoud assured Fisher Lebanon and Syria are seeking a just peace in the Middle East and are opposed to terrorism and extremism.

Fisher arrived in Beirut Friday as part of a Middle East tour that will take to Damascus Saturday.
