Fires kill seven in Indonesia

SEMARANG, Indonesia, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- At least seven people were killed and dozens of homes destroyed Thursday by two fires in two different towns in Indonesia.

The first fire, which killed six people, was in a crowded market area of Semarang, capital of Central Java, the Jakarta Post reported.

The fire was believed to have been caused by an electric short circuit, the report said.

The report said it took three hours for fire officials to respond to the emergency.

The bodies of the dead were found in the bathroom, where they apparently succumbed to smoke.

Witness Abdul Kadir Djalil said he alerted his neighbors after seeing the flames. But the neighbors could not reach the victims trapped inside their burning houses.

The other fire, in which one boy died, was in South Sulawesi capital of Makassar. The blaze also destroyed dozens of homes and one church.

Fire officials suspect the fire was caused by a stove explosion in one of the homes.
