U.S. working with Russia on Iran nukes

WASHINGTON, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department said Monday Washington was continuing to engage Russia on the issue of Iran's nuclear program.

"Iran's nuclear program has obviously been a topic of discussion between us and the government of Russia," department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said.

He noted Russia has not provided fuel for Iran's nuclear plant at Bushehr and that it was concerned along with others members of the international Atomic Energy Agency that Iran may be breaking its treaty obligations and clandestinely pursuing nuclear weapons.

"We view Iran's clandestine nuclear weapons program as a threat," Ereli said.

Washington had succeeded in involving the international community into pressuring Iran on its nuclear program, he said.

"There has been a newfound or newly won consensus, if you will, in the international community and in the IAEA that this program is of concern," he said.

The IAEA Board of Governors will meet again in September to discuss the issue.

Tehran maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
