Jenkins to admit desertion charges

TOKYO, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Charles Jenkins, the American accused of desertion in the Korean War, was expected Sunday to visit a U.S. military base and confess to charges against him.

Since leaving North Korea for Japan with his wife, former abductee Hitomi Soga, Jenkins has been staying in a Tokyo hospital for treatment, Kyodo News reported.

Jenkins had been seeking a plea bargain in discussions with a U.S. military lawyer who reportedly told Jenkins about conditions that would keep him out of prison.

Kyodo reported government sources as saying Jenkins has decided to confess to charges of deserting the U.S. military and accept the plea bargain.

After another meeting with the American military lawyer, scheduled for late August, Jenkins will probably visit the U.S. military's Camp Zama in Kanagawa Prefecture, the sources said.
