KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Taliban rebels have killed six Afghan army soldiers, Afghan officials announced Sunday.
The chief of police for the southern Kandahar province said the six soldiers died defending a check post in a remote part of the province. The Taliban had invaded the post Saturday.
The Taliban have increased their attacks on government targets as the Afghan government prepares for an Oct. 9 presidential election.
Kandahar was a former Taliban stronghold and the home province of Taliban leader Mullah Omar.
