LONDON, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The United Nations' agency for refugees protested Saturday the detention of asylum seekers in British prisons.
About 130 asylum seekers have been held in prisons, including Cardiff and Norwich, since Harmondsworth's closure following riots, the BBC reported.
The U.N.'s top refugee official in London told the BBC that the practice should stop.
Former Home Office minister John Denham said it was regrettable but the government had little choice.
Larry Hollingworth, London spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said Saturday: "We do not agree with people who have not been convicted of any crime being detained in prison, especially when these people came to this country to seek asylum, whether they were right in doing that, or whether they were wrong."
A Home Office spokeswoman said it was a response to exceptional circumstances, and the detainees would be moved from jail at the earliest opportunity.
