Northern Indian state braces for floods

"The two sides are in touch and they are monitoring the developments," an Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman said.

China has informed New Delhi about the possibility of flash floods in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh breaking out of a dam formed in the basin of the Pareechoo River in Tibet. The water level in the lake over the river began overflowing Thursday.

Indian army, air force helicopters and government agencies are on high alert, bracing for a possible disaster. Indian officials have described the situation as "potentially serious."

The lake in Tibet is 21 miles from the Indian border and was formed in July after a landslide blocked the river, which is a tributary of the larger Sutlej River.
