Fate of Egyptian hostage in Iraq uncertain

CAIRO, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Uncertainty is shrouding the fate of an Egyptian hostage who was reportedly beheaded by his kidnappers in Iraq after being accused of spying for U.S. forces.

The family of Mohammed Fawzi Metwalli said they are still waiting for confirmation of his fate after a group calling itself "Jihad and Tawheed" claimed that it had executed him by sword on charges of collaboration with the occupation forces.

But the Egyptian government has refrained from releasing any information about Metwalli's fate, saying Egyptian diplomats in Baghdad were following up the case.

An Egyptian security official told UPI that the authorities found in their records 200 people carrying the same name, including 60 who have left for Iraq at different times since 1991.

The missing Metwalli has been living in Iraq for 18 years, his family said.
