Ex-fugitive barred from brother's funeral

DARIEN, Conn., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- An imprisoned rapist from Connecticut who escaped trial for years while living it up in Europe will not be allowed to attend his brother's funeral.

Prison officials told the Hartford Courant that Alex Kelly may be escorted to a private viewing in Darien, but he cannot attend the formal services.

Kelly, now 37, is serving a 16-year sentence for two rapes committed in 1986 when he was a teenager. He was a fugitive for several years, spending his parents' money in Europe on skiing and other sports.

Russell Kelly, 30, died in a car crash this week in Yellowstone National Park. An older brother, Christopher, died of a drug overdose while Alex was in Europe.

A viewing was scheduled Friday evening for Russell Kelly with burial Saturday.
