Young couple electrocuted in NYC

NEW YORK, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A flash flood and a bolt of lightning downed a power line in New York City, creating an electrified torrent of water that killed a young couple.

Alana Berenson, 18, and her boyfriend Joseph Cheetham, 23, were trapped Wednesday as water engulfed their car at 15th Avenue and 117th Street in College Point.

"The water came out of nothing. They started panicking inside the car, waving their arms," witness Mark Anderson told the New York Post.

When Berenson opened the passenger door and got out, she was sucked under the surge of water. Cheetham then attempted to rescue her and was also pulled under.

"She grabbed onto him, and then she fell down. Then they both got electrocuted. It was like a magnet just pulled them down into the water," Anderson said.
