U.N.: Afghan rights check upcoming

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A U.N. expert is being sent to check on the exercise of political rights, human rights education and transitional justice in Afghanistan.

Cherif Bassiouni, the U.N. Independent Expert on Human Rights in Afghanistan, is due to arrive Saturday in Kabul and will hold talks with key Government officials, the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, U.N. and other international agencies and non-governmental organizations, said the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.World Headquarters in New York.

He will also check on the rights of prisoners and women and make on-site visits, the details of which have yet to be finalized.

In a related development, women in Faizabad in northeastern Thursday were to begin getting more legal support to combat discrimination and domestic violence and to improve their living conditions, the world organization said in release.
