WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., has hired a high profile Washington attorney, ostensibly to represent him in a potential Ethics Committee case.
The Montgomery Advertiser reported Wednesday that Greg Craig -- a partner in the law firm of Williams & Connolly who represented President Bill Clinton in his impeachment trail and is a senior advisor to the presidential campaign of Sen. John Kerry, D-N.Y. -- has been hired to represent Shelby.
The Senate Banking Committee chairman was the target of a two-year FBI probe into the leaking of classified information in the immediate aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks on World Trade Center and Pentagon while the senator was chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Shelby has denied leaking the data in question, which reportedly involved a coded message intercepted by the National Security Agency on the eve of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks but not translated until Sept. 12.
The Senate Ethics Committee was recently given the result of the investigation after the Department of Justice did not pursue charges.
