Ahmed Chalabi returns to Iraq

BAGHDAD, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Iraqi politician Ahmed Chalabi has returned to Baghdad to face arrest on money counterfeiting charges, the BBC reported Wednesday quoting his aides.

Arrest warrants for Chalabi and his nephew, Salem Chalabi, were issued by Iraqi judge Sunday, while Ahmed Chalabi was in Iran for a conference.

Salem Chalabi, the head of the tribunal trying former leader Saddam Hussein, is sought on suspicion of murder.

Both have dismissed the charges, saying they were politically motivated.

Ahmed Chalabi flew into Baghdad Wednesday, said Mithal al-Alusi with Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress group.

Alusi did not say whether Chalabi would surrender to police.

Chalabi, once a favorite of the United States, is accused of counterfeiting old Iraqi dinars, which were removed from circulation after Saddam Hussein fell from power, and changing them into new dinars.

Salem Chalabi, now in London, says he fears for his life and wants assurances about his safety before returning to Iraq.
