Paraguay fire likely caused by fat

ASUNCION, Paraguay, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Investigators of the recent shopping center fire in Paraguay that killed more than 400 people said Tuesday a build-up of cooking fat likely caused the blaze.

The BBC reported Prosecutor Edgar Sanchez said grease and charcoal remains had apparently ignited in a chimney over the grill in the Asuncion restaurant, with flames quickly spreading to the rest of the complex.

Sanchez said the chimney had not been maintained in good condition.

The Aug. 1 fire was Paraguay's worst disaster in decades. Authorities are still trying to identify 100 people who died in the incident.
