PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Myanmar Prime Minister Gen. Khin Nyunt said Tuesday it is unlikely pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi would be released now.
The comments were said to have been made to Cambodian officials, the Kyodo news agency reported, citing Cambodian sources. The leader of the former Burma was in the country for a one-day visit.
Kyodo said Nyunt vowed to hold "free and fair" elections that would allow Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy to participate, but did not set a time for such a process.
Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate, has been under arrest since May 2003 following what the ruling junta said were clashes between her supporters and pro-junta groups.
Myanmar has been under international sanctions for its crackdown on pro-democracy groups and continued confinement of Suu Kyi. The pro-democracy leader's NLD won the 1990 elections, but the ruling junta did not allow it to take power.
