HOUSTON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Former Enron Corp. Chairman Ken Lay has asked for a trial as early as September and court records say he has put up $15 million for his legal defense.
Lay said in court papers filed Monday he wants to be tried separately from his co-defendants, former Chief Executive Officer Jeff Skilling and former top accountant Rick Causey, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Mike Ramsey, Lay's Houston lawyer, told reporters his client is innocent and has suffered enough. He wants the trial over before the November election.
Prosecutors said in court papers that Lay, who faces 11 criminal charges, has set aside $15 million for his defense. Skilling has put up $23 million for his defense.
The government has asked the judge to order a trial of the three defendants together in March of next year.
