Iowans back ban on gay marriage

DES MOINES, Iowa, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Nearly two-thirds of Iowa adults surveyed in the latest Iowa Poll say they want the state's ban on gay marriage to remain in place.

Iowa is one of 39 states with laws outlawing same-sex marriages. In February, President Bush called for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.

The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled last year a prohibition against same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Now, some legal scholars argue a federal constitutional amendment is the only way to prevent gay marriage advocates from using the Constitution's full faith and credit clause to force other states to recognize same-sex unions.

In the July 17 to 21 Iowa Poll, 25 percent of 802 adults queried favored lifting Iowa's ban on gay marriages, the Des Moines Register reported Monday. But 65 percent said they were opposed to legalizing marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

The poll results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
