BERLIN, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A German man whose dog was trained to give the Nazi salute on cue has lost a bid to overturn his conviction for wearing a shirt depicting Hitler.

. The British news web site Ananova reports that an appeals court upheld Roland Thein's 13-month suspended sentence. Rein was convicted in Berlin of displaying a Nazi symbol and showing disrespect to a police officer.

Police approached Thein after someone overheard him yelling Sieg Heil. The officers said the dog lifted its right paw when Thein told him "do the salute."

A charge of training the dog -- named Adolph -- to salute was dropped.
