DETROIT, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Detroit voters have approved a largely symbolic proposal to legalize possession of marijuana for medical use.
The initiative was passed by a vote of 38,600 to 26,497 with 98 percent of the precincts reporting, the Detroit News said.
Detroit's proposal would allow people to possess marijuana for personal medical purposes without fear of arrest or tickets, but the measure does not negate state, county or federal drug laws.
People convicted of illegally possessing marijuana would still be subject to a $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.
The university communities of Ann Arbor, Mich., Madison, Wis., and Columbia, Mo., are considering similar marijuana initiatives.
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws says medical marijuana is legal in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington state.
