Texas plane crash kills six

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A small plane crashed into a house near Austin, Texas, Tuesday, killing six people aboard the aircraft.

Four adults and two children were on board the twin-engine plane that crashed about noon, the Texas Department of Public Safety told the Austin American-Statesman.

John Clabes, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the TS60 Smith Aerostar was on final approach to Lakeway Airpark.

The residents of the house in western Travis County were inside when the plane struck and burst into flames, but they escaped without injury, the Hudson Bend Fire Department said.

Paul Clark, a witness, told the American-Statesman he saw the plane struggling at 500 feet, attempting to gain altitude. He said the aircraft took a sharp left turn, then its left wing dipped and it plunged into the house.

The house burst into flames, with the cockpit lodged in the rear of the house and pieces of the aircraft scattered about the yard, rescue workers said.
