U.S. wants al-Qaida lynchpin

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The United States has asked Pakistan to extradite an al-Qaida lynchpin arrested last week.

"We have received a request from the United States for Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani. They want him to face charges in a U.S. court," Pakistan's Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat told reporters in Islamabad.

Ghailani, arrested last Thursday, was a suspect on the FBI's most wanted list with a $5 million bounty for his capture. Ghailani is a Tanzanian wanted for the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in East Africa that killed 224 people including 12 Americans.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Pakistan has arrested and extradited more 500 terror suspects to the United States.
