BEIJING, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- State media reports quote China's defense minister Cao Gangchuan saying the military is able to crush any move by Taiwan towards independence.

At a reception held in Beijing's Great Hall of the People Saturday ahead of Army Day on Aug. 1, Cao said, "There could be no peace or stability if Taiwan sought independence," according to the China Daily.

"If the Taiwan independence separatist forces obstinately persist in their course, the Chinese People's Liberation Army has the determination and ability to resolutely smash any Taiwan independence separatist plot," he added.

A report by the People's Daily quoted Cao saying the PLA had implemented the Three Represents ideology in an earnest way, and had "scored remarkable achievements in revolutionizing, modernizing and regularizing" the military over the last year.

Cao said the PLA would "steadfastly adhere to the absolute leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee at the core."
