Czech government talks deadlocked

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, July 29 (UPI) -- Overnight talks aimed at forming a coalition government in the Czech Republic have reached a deadlock, Czech Radio reported Thursday.

Prime Minister Stanislav Gross, who was appointed to his post on Monday, emerged from talks on Thursday morning no closer to a deal on the allocation of ministries among the three parties attempting to form a government.

Analysts say a deal is likely to be reached eventually, but ideological differences between the three parties could lead to protracted negotiations.

Gross, leader of the Social Democrats, is attempting to recreate the three-party coalition which has governed the Czech Republic since 2002 with the center-right Christian Democrats and the neo-liberal Freedom Union.

The government effectively collapsed last month after the Social Democrats ousted their own leader, Vladimir Spidla, following the party's disastrous showing in the June elections to the European Parliament.

Gross, at the age of 34, is Europe's youngest prime minister.
