Canada body-parts murder victim identified
MIAMI, July 28 (UPI) -- Florida Republican Senate candidate Mel Martinez has launched an ad campaign that one foe says implies endorsement by the White House.
The television ad begins with what appears to be an endorsement by President Bush and shows a newspaper headline that says "Bush Picks Martinez."
Neither relates to the current campaign. They refer to Martinez' service as housing secretary in the Bush administration, a job he gave up to run for Senate.
Fellow Republican candidate Dough Gallagher, a Miami businessman, said he plans to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission.
He said Martinez violates both federal and state elections laws by appearing to claim an endorsement from the president that he has not received.
The Martinez campaign claims the ad simply establishes a record of public service, including his time in the administration.
"The spot creates the impression it should -- that he was a Cabinet member, close adviser and friend of the president," said state party Chairman Al Cardenas, a Martinez supporter.
