GUANTANAMO BAY, July 27 (UPI) -- The U.S. military shipped four French nationals held at the Cuban Guantanamo Bay prison back to Paris Tuesday, the BBC reported.
"Following discussions between France and the United States on the French detainees in Guantanamo, the American authorities have decided to hand over to France four of those held on the Guantanamo military base, who will be repatriated to France today," a French Foreign Ministry statement said.
All four of the men were captured in Afghanistan, and will face anti-terrorism Judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere when they reach Paris.
The Pentagon recently said "approximately 595" detainees remain at Guantanamo from "more than 40 countries."
A total of 146 detainees have been released or "transferred for further detention" in their own countries.
