Activists push for St. Paul smoking ban

ST. PAUL, Minn., July 27 (UPI) -- Anti-smoking activists are lobbying the St. Paul, Minn., City Council to override Mayor Randy Kelly's veto of a sweeping smoking ban in bars and restaurants.

St. Paul would be the third Twin Cities community to approve a smoking ban if Kelly's veto is overturned at Wednesday's council meeting, the Minneapolis Star Tribune said.

Kelly vetoed the smoking ban after council members approved it 4-3 last month. Since that time, neighboring Minneapolis and suburban Bloomington have enacted tough smoking laws of their own.

The council has until Aug. 5 to attempt to override the veto.

The Minneapolis City Council voted 12-1 in favor of a smoking ordinance Friday that bans smoking in bars, restaurants, bowling alleys and pool halls.

Bloomington's smoking ban includes offices and workplaces and prohibits lighting up with 25 feet of building entrances, exits and open windows.

The smoking bans take effect in March.
