Killer moonshine strikes 17th victim

HEDMARK, Norway, July 26 (UPI) -- A man in Norway will likely be charged in his daughter-in-law's death for selling her an illegal bottle of moonshine that contained deadly methanol.

Aftenposten reported Monday the 31-year-old victim was the 17th to die from the illegal liquer, officials said.

Eighteen months ago, a 75-year-old man from Oslo bought as many of 8,000 liters of the methanol from a suspected smuggler. While the alleged smuggler and the Oslo man are in custody, police have been only able to locate about 2,000 liters of the illegal beverage.

Despite widespread publicity about the killer moonshine, a thriving black market for moonshine remains as a way to avoid paying Norway's high taxes on alcoholic beverages.

"We can't believe people keep buying and drinking it," one police officer told the television network Norwegian Broadcasting.
