BOSTON, July 26 (UPI) -- The Democratic National Convention opened Monday in Boston, after thousands of delegates, volunteers, party officials and media descended on the city.
The FleetCenter convention floor remained largely unpopulated after the convention officially began at 4 p.m. Monday, with more participants expected to attend the evening sessions, when keynote speakers were to address the delegates.
Former Vice President Al Gore, former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, and Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York were among the top names to address the session.
Monday's agenda included approval of the 4,353 delegates by the Credential Committee, one of three standing convention committees.
The Rules Committee also would meet, while Platform Committee Chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut would present the party's platform to the delegates, who were scheduled to vote on it Tuesday.
