Files show Kissinger warming to Nixon

LONDON, July 23 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger thought little of former President Richard Nixon at first but grew to like him, secret British files say.

A letter in the files said Kissinger had felt for years Nixon represented "all that was most objectionable in political life," The Scotsman reported.

But, Kissinger reportedly changed his opinion as he worked with Nixon and, according to the letter, came to regard his boss as good, generous and "basically warm-hearted".

In the letter, dated June 5, 1970, Kissinger said the president was cautious and thorough in his approach to problems, but "ruthless at the moment of decision."

Kissinger went on to enjoy an "extraordinarily close" relationship with Nixon, the newly released files said. He was shown as regarding officials who surrounded Nixon as "self-seeking (expletives)," the newspaper said.

The letter was sent from John Freeman, then the British ambassador in Washington, to Sir Denis Greenhill, under-secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
