Bush orders review of 9-11 proposals

WASHINGTON, July 23 (UPI) -- President Bush has ordered a top level review of the recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission, which is to report back "promptly."

"The president has directed Chief of Staff Andy Card to set up a taskforce of ... officials to review the proposals of the Sept. 11 commission," White House spokeswoman Jeanie Mamo told United Press International.

The commission, set up to enumerate the failures that allowed suicide hijackers to kill 3000 people with commandeered jetliners, published its final report Thursday, laying out a series of sweeping reforms of congress and the intelligence community, and a huge boost to border and transportation security.

The task force, consisting of White House homeland and national security officials is charged to "report back on the next steps promptly," said Mamo.

The commission has said that many of their recommendations could be implemented by executive order, with out the need for legislation, and has called for swift action to make the country safer from terrorism.
