Train searched after 'suspicious' note found

NEWARK, N.J., July 22 (UPI) -- An Amtrak train heading into New York was stopped at Newark, N.J., and searched Thursday after a passenger found a suspicious note, officials said.

Amtrak spokesman Dan Stessel, in an interview with CNN, said the train from Washington to New York was stopped and held for about 15 minutes for the search.

"There was no threat to the train," Stessel told CNN, adding there was no reason to believe there was anything on board that could be considered dangerous.

Stessel said the train was stopped at Newark shortly before 8 a.m. after a passenger found a "suspicious" note in a train restroom. An Amtrak employee was informed and that person contacted police.

People were kept on the train and passengers' identification checked, Stessel said. Police used a dog to help search the train.

Stessel said the stop at Newark was about 15 minutes longer than usual because of the incident.
