Nelson asks audit of Florida vote machines

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., July 20 (UPI) -- Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., has asked state and federal authorities for a review of Florida's voting machines, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

The Democrat from Melbourne, Fla., sent letters to Attorney General John Ashcroft and Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood asking for an independent audit.

The targets are the touch-screen machines that will be in place in 15 of Florida's largest counties.

Nelson said there was a much greater incidence of undervotes in counties with touch-screen devices in recent elections than in those using older scanning machines.

"There has been sufficiently new information that has come up that casts doubt on the accuracy of the recording of votes," Nelson said.

Hood responded quickly Monday, sending Nelson a letter saying she was willing to have experts and elections supervisors demonstrate the machines for him.

"I am disappointed that you have declined these offers to date," she said.
