BUENOS AIRES, July 20 (UPI) -- The Catholic Church and Argentine President Nestor Kirchner Tuesday reconciled some of the ill words that have passed between them.
Jorge Casaretto, bishop of San Isidro and incumbent head of Caritas Argentina, a Catholic humanitarian organization, met with Kirchner at the Pink House, or presidential residence, during the launch of a program to provide housing to the poor.
During the encounter, the president praised organizations such as Caritas that "do much and demand nothing."
"The relation between the church and the state is an autonomous relation. The church has to be, the state has to be," Kirchner said.
Nevertheless, Casaretto responded: "For the church, violence is never conducive to anything. We are trying to return to a dialogue."
The relations between Kirchner and the Argentine curate have been rocky with strong criticism between different bishops and the president, but the meeting indicated relations were on a more harmonious course.
