JERUSALEM, July 17 (UPI) -- Israel's Labor Party intended Saturday to request Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Gaza disengagement be sped up when negotiations on widening the coalition begin Sunday night.
Labor chairman Shimon Peres said he intends to appoint a negotiating team made up of MKs and attorneys following a meeting Sunday morning with Sharon at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem, the Jerusalem Post reported. Peres intends to ask Sharon for new coalition guidelines that would make it clear that a national-unity government with Labor is Sharon's top priority in coalition talks.
"We have no intention of giving up our principles on withdrawing from the Gaza Strip as soon as possible and improving social conditions," Labor faction chair Dalia Itzik said. "Sharon needs us and not the other way around. Peres already has a Volvo, a nice office, and a better reputation around the world than the prime minister."
