Erratic, gusty winds have caused numerous flare-ups along the Waterfall fire lines where commanders expected some significant growth along much of the perimeter by the end of the day.

The Pine Canyon fire, about 50 miles from L.A., was up to 14,000 acres by midday and forced another 1,000 residents of the rural area to flee their homes. Smoke advisories were in place over many areas of the sprawling county.

Forecasters expected humidity to remain fairly high in Southern California Friday while drier air was expected in the northern half of the state as well as in western Nevada.
