Wife of Gen. dies after husband's arrest

BUENOS AIRES, July 15 (UPI) -- The wife of a former Argentine military leader died when she heard her husband would be arrested for his role during the nation's dictatorship.

Renee Cuello had a fatal heat attack after hearing a judge's order calling for the arrest of her husband, former Gen. Juan Pablo Saa, 77, in "Operation Condor" in the 1970s, La Nacion newspaper reported Thursday. "Operation Condor" was the pact among six South American nations to track down political opponents of those nations' right-wing military regimes.

Earlier this week, Judge Jorge Urso also ordered the house arrest of former Argentine Interior Minister Eduardo Albano Harguindeguy and 10 other former leaders accused of human rights violations during Argentina's brutal military regime.

Since assuming office in May 2003, President Nestor Kirchner has led a campaign for the arrest and prosecution of former military leaders during Argentina's 1973-83 dictatorship in which an estimated 30,000 Argentineans were killed or disappeared.
