Dying Forbes editor was stuck in elevator

MOSCOW, July 14 (UPI) -- Forbes' Russian Editor Paul Klebnikov, shot four times last week, died while stuck in a Moscow hospital elevator, the Moscow Times said Wednesday.

Two ambulances responded Friday after Klebnikov was hit by four bullets as he left work. Klebnikov was conscious when they arrived, but was having difficulty breathing. However, neither of the two ambulances had oxygen, said Alexander Gordeyev, the editor of the Russian edition of Newsweek, who was at the scene.

When they arrived at Moscow City Hospital No. 20, they raced Klebnikov into an elevator to take him up to an operating room, but the elevator went down instead and became stuck, Izvestia reported.

"Apart from the patient, there were nine other people in the elevator," said elevator attendant Zorik Ichinkhorio, who told Izvestia any more than five people can overload the elevator.

A mechanic arrived in 15 or 20 minutes to open the door, but by that time Klebnikov was dead, Ichinkhorio said.
