Indonesia expresses concerns over bugging

JAKARTA, July 13 (UPI) -- Indonesia Tuesday summoned Myanmar's ambassador to convey "deep concern" over the alleged bugging of the Indonesian embassy in Yangoon.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yuri Thamrin said the Indonesian government conveyed "deep concern" to authorities in Yangoon, formerly Rangoon, were eavesdropping on the embassy, a violation of the Vienna Convention.

An Indonesian legislator has said Myanmar intelligence services apparently wanted to know the real position of Indonesia and the other members of the Association of South East Asian Nations on the detention of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Indonesia June 30 hosted the annual meeting of the group's foreign ministers.

Political developments in Myanmar, an ASEAN member formerly known as Burma, were a major topic of the meeting with some countries seeking a tougher ASEAN line against the junta.

Myanmar deputy foreign minister U Khing Maung Win summoned the Indonesian ambassador Monday to deny the bugging allegations and express hope the government "would take the necessary steps to dispel the false media reports."
