Hundreds of suspects arrested in Saudi

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, July 13 (UPI) -- Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz said authorities have rounded up hundreds of terror suspects, some of whom already have been tried.

"There are hundreds of detainees, some of whom have actually participated in terrorist attacks and are being questioned," Nayef said after a cabinet meeting nate Monday.

Nayef denied the existence of al-Qaida in Saudi Arabia and said the few extremists who have followed it "are being dealt with by the authorities."

The suspected leader of al-Qaida in Saudi Arabia, Abdel Aziz al-Muqrin, was believed killed with three accomplices in a police raid on their hideout in Riyadh last month.

Nayef denied any intention of extending a one-month deadline for wanted terrorists to surrender to qualify for general amnesty. The deadline expires July 23.

He said the list of 26 most wanted terrorists published in December is now down to 13. The rest have been killed or already have surrendered.
