Coach's wife against Ditka Senate bid

CHICAGO, July 13 (UPI) -- Diana Ditka, the no-nonsense wife of former head football coach Mike Ditka, says her husband would be nuts to run for U.S. Senate in Illinois.

Ditka reportedly has talked to Illinois Republican Party Chairman Judy Baar Topinka about stepping in to replace former nominee Jack Ryan on the November ballot. Ryan withdrew after embarrassing sex clubs allegations in his divorce from actress Jeri Ryan became public.

Diana Ditka says some of the NFL Hall of Famer's friends in California are trying to persuade him to run, citing Arnold Schwarzenegger's election as governor last fall.

"And I'm trying to talk him out of it," Diana told the Chicago Sun-Times. "Although, I know if he ever did something like that and he won, he'd be very good at it -- except Mike doesn't hold things back. He'd be criticized a lot for his comments."

The Super Bowl XX-winning coach is a staunch political conservative.
