Kushinagar, the chosen site, is a town in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and the site of Buddha's death 25 centuries ago. The government of Uttar Pradesh and a Japanese religious group are funding the project, the BBC said.

The Kushinagar Buddha would be the largest statue in the world. However, an even bigger statue, 555 feet tall, is planned for Houston, Texas. The Houston statue, The Spirit of Houston, a statue of a woman, would symbolize friendship.
