GENEVA, Switzerland, July 10 (UPI) -- The World Health Organization says more AIDS victims in Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe are living longer because of free treatment.

Voice of America reported Saturday that WHO said it is likely the agency would meet its goal of providing free AIDS anti-retroviral drugs to 3 million people by the end of next year.

"Now, we estimate about 440,000 people are on treatment with anti-retroviral drugs," said Ian Smith, WHO's director-general.

"Clearly, there has been progress and we can confidently say that getting 3 million people on treatment by the end of 2005 is a realistic, and is an achievable target on the way towards the goal of universal access to treatment."

Over the next 18 months, WHO will need $200 million to help developing countries implement treatment and care programs for AIDS victims, Smith said.
