Republicans aiding Nader in Michigan

LANSING, Mich., July 9 (UPI) -- Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader is getting some help from Republicans in his fight to get on the ballot in Michigan.

State Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer told the Detroit Free Press he thinks the Republicans are being "unethical."

"This is not something we'd ever engage in. We're not out there recruiting a Libertarian to put on the ballot," he said.

Many Democrats blame Nader's run four years ago as the Green Party candidate for the election of President Bush. While Nader got only 4 percent of the vote nationwide, he pulled enough votes in some states to affect the outcome.

Nader, who has been endorsed by the Reform Party, must gather 30,000 signatures of registered voters by Thursday to get on the ballot in Michigan, a state where Democratic candidate John Kerry now has a slight edge in the polls.

Republican chairman Gregg McNeilly said that his party is interested in giving voters a choice. He called the Democrats "the disenfranchisement party" and accused them of crossing over to vote in the Republican Primary for John McCain, giving him victory in Michigan.

Brewer promised that every Nader signature will be carefully examined.
